It's Wellness Wednesday! The term "wellness" can sometimes feel like a big, intimidating umbrella that covers all the healthy routines you should be following but can't quite fit into daily life. I get it. There are only so many hours in the day and we are all busy working the daily grind and living busy lives. But let me tell you friends, it is NOT something beyond our reach. It is nothing more than making small daily choices and simple changes that lead up to lifelong, very big healthy changes! Since our home is where we spend a lot of our time, I wanted to share how to improve health and wellness at home with these 6 simple tips! Just a few changes can improve the health of your home and everyone in it!
I’m sure most of you know I LOVE plants –the vibrant green makes me feel calm, and I enjoy taking care of them. Plants are living things, and when you’re surrounded by living things you will feel better; you’re literally bringing more life into your house! Some of them even clean your air! But I know it is not easy to take care of plants so if you’re wanting to bring some green into your home, you can read about the 7 easy-to-care-for plants that remove different toxins.
There's actually an important reason to go Marie Kondo on your home that goes far beyond improving the aesthetics. Visual “noise” increases stress. A cluttered, dirty, or confusing environment can cause us to feel worried, sad, or helpless. Removing clutter not only reduces stress, increase productivity, but it is also physically healthier because it removes dust particles and toxins from the air.
This year, I ruthlessly purged and organized my entire house. You can read about the products I used to help organize my kitchen here, and my bathroom and closet organization tips are here.
As part of my wellness journey, I've been cleaning out my cabinets and transitioning the products in my home to all natural ones––without toxins. My tip is to slowly switch out products one at a time so it doesn’t seem daunting and expensive. I would start with the products you use daily like house cleaners, toothpaste, body wash, and deodorant.
I love Native! I first discovered them when I tried their deodorant formulated WITHOUT aluminum and parabens. It is filled with wholesome ingredients that you can read and understand, such as coconut oil, shea butter, probiotics, baking soda and, tapioca starch. The baking soda and/or tapioca starch will help with moisture absorption, while essential oils & probiotics help fight odor-causing bacteria. If you have sensitive skin––check out the sensitive skin collection formulated without baking soda.
I replaced all of our cleaning products with these natural cleaners from Amazon.
Being well-rested is important because it helps your brain function and improves your emotional well-being and physical health. The bedroom is where we spend a lot of time well, sleeping. So make sure that you create a serene and relaxing environment. You can check out my step-by-step guide to creating a bedroom sanctuary.
A consistent morning routine is a recipe for a good day, and I like to wake up early enough to not to have to rush through it. My daily routine consists of my skincare, oil pulling & brushing my teeth with natural toothpaste, writing in my gratitude journal, taking my supplements, and drinking coffee. It will take time to customize a routine that works with your body and schedule so try a few things out to see what works and what doesn’t.
I also find that having an affirmative quote on a letter board or repeating a mantra gets me in that positive, kick-butt mentality to be productive for the day. Listening to a motivational podcast such as Rise by Rachel Hollis (author of Girl, Wash Your Face) or How I Built This, with Guy Raz.
Everyone has a different definition of “wellness”. Even so, I’ve found that by doing these six wellness tips on a consistent basis gets me in a more positive mental frame of mind and better wellness overall. Try out my different ways to bring more balance and wellness into your life or create your own!
