Have you guys ever noticed when you eat poorly for a few days, your skin flares up with acne? I often talk about skin care, but today I want to go a little deeper (pun intended) and talk about the connection between your gut's digestive health and your overall skin health and how to get rid of bad bacteria in the gut!
It's no secret that I am a huge advocate for having a skincare routine. Today, I want to cover the gut and skin connection – how digestion affects our skin and what we can do about it. One of the number one causes of acne is the build-up of harmful bacteria, yeast, and candida in your gut and digestive tract. If you really want to cure your acne and clear up your skin, it has to start from within!
If you have taken antibiotics, birth control, drank chlorinated water, high amounts of alcohol, and consumed excess sugar, refined carbs, and bad oils... All of those increase bad bacteria and yeast in your gut.
Well, first of all, stop eating sugar! It feeds the yeast and candida in your gut. Instead, use healthy sugar alternatives like Stevia, for your coffee and Monk Fruit for baking. This also means lowering your fruit intake, and only eating berries in moderation.
Also, cutting out grains is essential, especially gluten, because gluten is another cause of inflammation, and inflammation in your gut will show up on your skin. Most people correlate acne or eczema primarily as a skin issue, but it's really a gut issue. So if you fix your gut, you’ll fix your skin.
Lastly, eliminate bad fats and hydrogenated oils from your diet, because it will also show up on your skin! Throw out vegetable and canola oil! Switch to coconut oil for cooking, and eat healthy fats like avocados, wild salmon, and healthy nuts in moderation.
- Foods high in fiber: Leafy greens like spinach and seeds like chia seeds, almonds, etc. Fiber will help get rid of bad bacteria!
- Fermented Foods
- Healthy proteins: I only buy organic meat!
- Coconut oil: An amazing, good fat with antibacterial & antimicrobial properties that kill off harmful bacteria!
Once you’ve changed your diet, let’s talk about the best supplement to help fight bad bacteria in your gut. Taking a quality probiotic supplement not only helps kill off the bad bacteria in your gut it also helps boost your immune system.
As most of you know, I am a huge fan of Tula, a Probiotic skincare brand I’ve been using for several years. I talk about these products all the time because I genuinely love them. In addition to using their skin products, I started taking their Daily Probiotic & Skim Health Complex supplement. As always, Tula’s products are gluten-free, 100 percent vegetarian, no GMO's, lactose-free, soy free, with no artificial sweeteners, and no preservatives!
Note: Initially, I was taking probiotics first thing in the morning, but I discovered the best time to take probiotics is with food, and not on an empty stomach. So I take it with my breakfast!
All topical products matter! I recommend using a high-quality probiotic, skincare line, such as Tula. Like our digestive system, we need both good and bad bacteria. Not only will Tula Probiotic Skincare kill off harmful bacteria on your skin and keep the good bacteria, but it also moisturizes your skin. You can read about my full skincare routine here. But these are the products I use on the daily:
Use my Tula skincare discount code GYPSYGLOW for 20% off on their website. This code never expires, so feel free to use it anytime!
The bottom line is this – if you’re struggling with your skin, it’s time you checked your gut. The foods you eat are metabolized and by-products from food breakdown are directly available to your skin. This is why what you eat has so much influence over your skin’s appearance.
Think of your skin as a window into the health of your gut.
Obviously, I’m not a dermatologist or doctor, but I’ve done extensive research on good and bad gut bacteria and attained my knowledge from medical sites. However, please consult with your doctor if you are looking for more detailed information.
Doesn’t it all make sense now? When you improve the health of your gut bacteria, you may find that skin issues you’ve been dealing with for years dramatically improve. Honestly, GUT health is EVERYTHING!
